Installation @ IRIS Dubai

2020

For this project I worked in collaboration with Hybrid Installations to create an interactive floor for the outdoor bar & restaurant IRIS in Dubai.

While Hybrid did all of the physical setup (projectors, mapping etc.), I was programming the content in TouchDesigner and linking it to the Kinects.

The basic idea was to hang two Kinect Azures from the ceiling and projecting particles on the floor. The Kinects then captured the visitors' movements and translated them into a direct manipulation of the visual content. So basically, people walked upon a field of flowers or snow flakes and by moving, they pushed them away.

The main challenge of the project was the preperation as I had to create a similar setup to the one on scene. The way I handled this was by not hanging the Kinects form the ceiling, but making them look up and faking moving heads by swinging an orange over it, which worked surprisingly well. Another challenge was the exact translation of the visitors position into the projected image which took a lot of experimenting on scene.
